Video: Frank Fontana's Painting Tips from Our WGN TV Appearance

Enjoy this great little video clip from our WGN TV appearance with Frank Fontana.

Frank’s Tips:

Create the illusion of an expensive lower wall without breaking the bank by using blue painters tape to create a dramatic line. Paint lines with a semi-gloss white paint.

A great secret tip of the trades is to create a design, draw it out and tape the edges. Apply a dead flat varnish to seal the edges so that when you pull the painters tape off your design will have a straight edge with no paint bleeding. You can use the dead flat varnish to help create any wall design with paint to help give that professionally painted look.

Chalkboard paint is a hot trend. The paint is a good way to personalize your walls instead of using picture frames.  Create something unique and write inspirational quotes or have your children write things that make them happy.

Use two different types of paint to add texture (plaster look), shimmer or a fun pop of color to your walls and instantly create a new look.

Bright Ideas – Exploring Renewable Energy with Norman Johnson

Norman Johnson of  I-R-E
I have always been a pretty GREEN person, with litter being my number one nemesis. After working for 25 years as an electrician, some life changes caused me to re-evaluate how the balance of my career would be spent.  During that process, information about renewables, solar in particular, seemed to keep popping up in front of me.  News stories, magazine articles and web content started to fuel my curiosity.  After catching up with the technical aspects and learning that the industry as a whole was at its very beginnings, interest increased.  With a solid electrical construction background, there was a comfort level with how the systems are put together, so in June of 2010 we opened for business as Independence Renewable Energy LLC.

Renewable energy is comprised of five principal sources: solar (known as photo-voltaic or PV,) wind, moving water, biomass and heat from inside the earth. These forms of energy are continually replenished, as long as the sun continues to shine.  Fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and natural gas are finite sources, which will eventually be depleted or become too expensive or damaging to retrieve.

To begin an adventure into renewable energy, first start by becoming more efficient. The less energy you consume, the more you will increase the value of any renewable energy system.  There are fun solar powered toys and cell phone chargers that are great ways to see that the technology really works.  An amazing thing about most renewables, solar in particular, is that it’s scalable and expandable. Consumers can start with a relatively small system with an eye toward adding on in the future.

Avoid pitfalls by researching and comparing options.  In renewable, one size most certainly does not fit all.  Quality equipment and proper installation methods are most important.  Renewables are now a worldwide industry with components being sourced from all over.  Be sure there is a good warranty backed by a manufacturer that has a history, and will be around to honor any issues.  Insist on an installer that is qualified.  In any large growth industry, you will find companies that “add on” a service in an effort to increase revenues.  Renewables are no exception.  In many areas, codes are still catching up to the growth. Look for an installer that is willing to educate, not just sell.

Investigate the tax incentives currently available to homeowners.  There is a 30% federal tax credit on the entire installed cost of a system.  Illinois has a cyclical rebate program that can reach up to 25% of the installed cost.  REC (Renewable Energy Credit) sales are coming to Illinois in 2015.  There is a great resource that tracks these programs.

Visit www.dsireusa.org, a one-stop, renewable energy incentive website.

The future of renewable energy is limitless!  So much of the planet is years ahead of us with implementation of renewables.  In our country, the Midwest is lagging behind the coasts, but we are catching up fast.  With wind, solar, hydro, bio-mass and more, there are numerous types of renewables, each with a place in our world.  Reduce energy costs and your carbon footprint, and make our planet a brighter place.  Enough energy from the sun hits the earth in one hour to provide all the world’s power for an entire year.  The answer to our energy needs is truly over our heads.

Looking Back Over 30 Years with Event Founder, Joanne Kennedy

In 1974, my husband and I purchased an old English Tudor home.  It had a beautiful brick exterior with good bones, steel beam construction, plaster walls, exquisite architectural details and lovely curb appeal; however it was sorely in need of updating.  We rolled up our sleeves, established a five year plan and ventured into projects.  We ripped up carpets to bare the original oak floors, stripped layers of paint off the beautiful walnut doors, casings, 5” floor mouldings and 14 windows.  As we finished a room, a fresh coat of paint and our own decorating began to bring new life into our much loved home.  The ladder and tool box were always close by.

Little did we know that restoring our home would be hands-on job training for the next chapter of our lives, launching our humble events business. In those days, work and home melded together.  I worked from home, while working on my home improvement projects, which in turn fueled ideas on how to enhance our home improvement shows.  My office was the dining room table and many meetings and brainstorming sessions took place at this gathering space.

In the 1980’s we expanded our home with a two-story addition for a family room and master suite.  That was another leap of faith for our family, and our vision of creating a warm, welcoming space forged the way.  This project delivered fabulous results, with added living areas and also provided the name of our current event, The Old House New House Home Show.  We had the character and mystique of an older home with all of the modern comforts of new surroundings.

Over the past 30 years we have seen many changes in this event.  What began with 30 exhibitors in a small suburban shopping mall has blossomed into a biannual tradition, hosting 300 award-winning contractors, creative craftsmen and talented designers.  Many of our clients have family businesses like we do and it warms my heart to see so many second and third generations successfully taking the reigns of responsibility.

Special guests like Norm Abram, Kevin O’Conner, Roger Cook, Rich Trethewey, Tom Silva and Steve Thomas from This Old House have attracted audiences and delighted homeowners with hands-on, helpful advice.  Other guests include Dean Johnson and Joann Liebeler of Hometime, Nicole Curtis from Rehab Addict, and our current featured guests, Lou Manfredini and Frank Fontana.  Each expert has added creative energy, innovation and excitement.

This event has been witness to a full range of housing market conditions, a variety of interest rates and fluctuating consumer confidence outlooks.  Throughout these changes the concept of home has remained very much the same.  Our homes are the hubs of our lives and the safe havens for our families to gather, relax, regroup and rest.   Over the past 30 years The Old House New House Home Show has been a steadfast fixture helping homeowners weather the storm of ever changing demands of home life.

The world around us continues to change with the onset of technology and information, alternative building techniques, new construction materials, smart homes and affordable renewable energy.  Home living will continue to evolve; The Old House New House Home Show will continue to adapt, providing an inspiring, reliable resource and helping homeowners usher in the changes with ease.

Joanne Kennedy is the President of Kennedy Productions, Inc.  She is still enjoying her English Tudor, where she continues to lovingly maintain and improve her surroundings with help from many Old House New House experts.

Form, Function and Family – A Minute with Design Expert, Frank Fontana

Known as “The Design Dude,” Frank Fontana has been building a successful career for decades. As host of HGTV’s top-rated “Design on a Dime” and “Take Over my Makeover,” author of the popular book, Dirty Little Secrets of Design, creator of a signature line for Eddie Z’s, host of a radio program on WGN and a frequent contributor to the Today Show and Oprah.com, Frank is framing out admirable accomplishments.  Frank takes a minute with Old House New House Home Show Producer, Laura McNamara, to share his tools for successful design and his foundation, fixed firmly in family and fun.

Can you describe the home where you were raised?

I grew up in a first generation Italian home.  It was comfortable, full of love, family, and food.  And, of course the decor was gaudy and over the top (…laughing.)

When did you know that you were destined for design?

Ever since I was a kid I had the natural ability to draw, and with my imagination I could visualize things in vivid detail.

How did you first become interested in interior design?

In the nightlife and hospitality industry, my design skills came to life through creating theme parties and wild decor for events.  I knew I had that itch to create amazing spaces, and budgets were always tight so I had to make a dollar out of a dime.

How have the places you have lived in your life influenced your taste in design?

I have traveled the world, and lived in the biggest cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.  All have helped to add to my depths of creativity as each offers different creative energies and experiences to pull from.

How do you define your signature style?

It’s global eclectic: a mix of imported and vintage style with a time-worn, hand-made, earthy vibe.

In 3 words, what does every Frank Fontana project embody?

Function, form, fantasy.

What are the biggest mistakes that you see homeowners making these days?

Being too safe, and catalogue shopping!!  I say be brave, have mismatched end tables, unique fabrics, etc.

What are your influences?  Inspirations?  Mentors?

I have had and continue to have great inspirations in my life.  Many people have mentored me in creative and spiritual aspects, and I thank them all.  My wife, kids and parents take top billing!

When you are not busy working, designing, or on the air, what are your hobbies or interests?

My project home consumes me, but when not fixing it up, I'm a huge fitness buff.  I do cross-fit three times a week and walk and run the others.  I also spend as much time playing with my kids as possible since they are only young once.  Everything else is second!

Frank Fontana is presenting his “Interior Design Secrets” workshop on Sunday, 9/28 at noon.  Following his presentation, he will meet and greet fans in the Eddie Z’s Booth, #602.  For more information, visit www.eddiezs.com or www.frankfontana.net.
